Around 1970's Benidorm experienced a touristic boom based on the vertical transformation of a little coastal town into what it nowadays is, definitely one of the most popular destinations in Spain, particularly among British, Germans, Dutch and Belgian tourists, but also within nationals. A successful model that has been one of the engines of Spain's most prolific industry, the tourism.

With the Covid pandemic and the restrictions to travel, which affected more severely to British tourists, hotels have been closed for long time. Some of them even went out of business. And the ones which survived took the opportunity to undergo some renovation process. However, Benidorm is a safe bet and there are new hotels being built and ready to open for the season.

This series was shot in the beginning of June 2021, just a few weeks before the hotels re-opened their doors and started welcoming visitors again. This allowed to capture Benidorm, normally crowded and overflowing with life, from a totally different perspective, focusing on the emptiness of hotels and touristic buildings. Towels, swimming suits, colorful umbrellas and inflatable beach mattresses no longer decorated the balconies and the streets were quieter than ever. Luckily, the tourists are back in town and the city breathes to the fullest once again.
Residential building where mostly locals live. The only sign of life in Benidorm for long time.
This colorful tower is a new construction coming to life very soon.
Thank you all!
